*sigh*
Personal Insight Brought On By Online Gaffe
I usually look at metafilter every day, but if you want to participate in it intelligently, you really have to be somewhat obsessive about reading it. I missed a subject posted yesterday (endless meetings) and subsequently ended up making a front-page double-post today. This of course is really embarrassing, since you tend to get your ass kicked in the comments. Luckily for the most part I am getting by unscathed, but (to me) some of the comments were really baffling. (You can't see them now, the post has finally been deleted.)
I would think that people would just ignore the thread after they realized it was a double-post, but many people still made little silly comments on the subject of the article. While on the other hand, some other people used the space to discuss something entirely non-related. (And that is entirely fine with me.)
But the whole thing just points out to me, yet again, that I still really don't get a lot online culture, the social rules etc., so just like in real time, I am totally going to go around looking like a doofus.
Not to jump to conclusions, but: No wonder no one reads this thing. If I can't get it right, what's the use?
(BTW - I can't find an official statement on mefi regarding what to do if you double-post, or if you find a double-post, which makes the whole experience even more frustrating, for various reasons. I'm sure there is one)
